Compatibility, Certifications & Safe Handling

Information on this page reflects verified specifications. We do not claim certifications that have not been obtained.

Power Delivery (USB-C) Input Requirements

The NLBA1 PRO is powered via USB-C and requires a power source that can deliver a minimum of 45 W (20 V × 2.25 A or equivalent PD negotiation) to operate all charge/discharge functions at full capacity. A 65 W or higher PD-compatible adapter is recommended for stable operation during high-drain discharge tests.

  • Minimum for basic operation: USB-C PD 45 W (20 V)
  • Recommended for full performance: USB-C PD 65 W or above
  • Standard USB-A or non-PD USB-C ports (5 V/900 mA) will not provide sufficient power — the device will not operate correctly.

Note: A USB-C PD adapter is not included in the box. Please ensure your power source supports Power Delivery before purchase. If you are unsure, contact us before ordering.

Supported Battery Connectors

The NLBA1 PRO communicates with laptop batteries using the industry-standard SMBus (System Management Bus) protocol. It includes a universal interface board with pogo-pin contacts designed to mate with the most common multi-pin battery connectors found in laptops from major manufacturers including, but not limited to: Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, Toshiba, and Sony.

  • Supported pin counts: Typically 4-pin to 11-pin smart battery packs with SMBus data lines (Clock/Data/Thermistor/Charge-Inhibit).
  • Not supported: Proprietary sealed batteries with no exposed SMBus contacts, or batteries that use non-standard communication protocols not based on SMBus/I²C.
  • Compatibility with a specific battery model cannot be guaranteed without testing. The product includes a test function to verify communication before proceeding with charge/discharge cycles.

Certifications

The NLBA1 PRO is designed and manufactured to meet applicable safety standards for professional electronic test equipment. Please review the following statements carefully:

  • CE marking: The device is CE marked, indicating conformity with applicable EU directives for electrical equipment placed on the European market.
  • RoHS: Components are selected to comply with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) requirements.
  • UL / FCC / Other regional certifications: No UL, FCC, or equivalent regional certifications are currently claimed for this product. If a specific certification is required for your region or application, please contact us before purchasing.

Important: This is a professional repair tool intended for use by qualified technicians. It is not a consumer appliance. Buyers are responsible for confirming that the product meets any certification requirements applicable in their jurisdiction.

Safe Handling & Electrical Risk Guidance

Working with lithium-ion laptop batteries involves genuine electrical hazards. Please read and follow these guidelines before using the NLBA1 PRO:

  • Work in a ventilated area. Discharging or reviving deeply depleted cells can cause off-gassing. Never operate the device in an enclosed space without adequate airflow.
  • Inspect the battery before connecting. Do not connect swollen, leaking, cracked, or physically damaged battery packs. Damaged cells can vent, overheat, or ignite.
  • Never leave unsupervised during deep charge/discharge cycles. Monitor the device and the connected battery throughout any capacity-correction or revive procedure.
  • Use on a non-flammable surface. Place the device and any battery under test on a fire-resistant mat or tray — never on wood, carpet, or upholstered surfaces.
  • Observe polarity. Connecting a battery pack with reversed polarity can permanently damage the device and may cause sparking or heat generation.
  • Avoid short circuits. Keep metal tools, jewellery, and conductive debris away from exposed battery terminals and the device connector contacts.
  • Do not exceed the rated input power. Using an adapter rated below the minimum 45 W PD threshold may cause erratic behaviour or device damage.
  • Unplug immediately if you detect heat, smell, or smoke. Disconnect the USB-C power source and move the battery to a safe, outdoor location. Do not attempt to extinguish a lithium battery fire with water.

⚠ Electrical Risk: This device operates at voltages up to 25 V DC. While low voltage compared to mains electricity, high-capacity lithium-ion cells can deliver very high short-circuit currents. Always treat a connected battery pack as a live electrical source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the minimum Power Delivery wattage required to run the NLBA1 PRO?
A: A minimum of 45 W USB-C PD (at 20 V) is required for full operation. We recommend a 65 W or higher PD adapter for the best experience, especially during discharge tests.

Q: Will the NLBA1 PRO work with my laptop's USB-C charger?
A: Only if your charger supports USB Power Delivery (PD) at 20 V and outputs at least 45 W. Many slim laptop chargers do meet this threshold — check the label on your adapter. Standard phone or tablet chargers are not sufficient.

Q: Does the device support all laptop battery connectors?
A: The NLBA1 PRO supports the vast majority of multi-pin SMBus laptop batteries. Compatibility depends on the battery's communication protocol and physical connector layout. Use the built-in communication test to verify before running any charge/discharge procedure.

Q: Is the NLBA1 PRO CE certified?
A: Yes, the device carries CE marking for the European market. No UL or FCC certification is currently claimed. Contact us if you need documentation for a specific regulatory requirement.

Q: Can I use the NLBA1 PRO on a swollen or damaged battery?
A: No. Never connect a swollen, leaking, or physically damaged battery to the device. Doing so creates a risk of fire or injury. Damaged batteries should be safely disposed of through an appropriate e-waste or battery recycling programme.

Specifications and safety guidance are provided in good faith based on the product's verified design. For questions not covered here, please contact us before purchasing.
